Dr Frederik Claeyssens

Dr Frederik Claeyssens (FC) was appointed as a lecturer in Biomaterials at the Materials Science and Engineering Department of the University of Sheffield in August 2008. Before this, he was awarded an EPSRC Life Sciences Interface (LSI) research fellowship at the University of Bristol (2006-2009). His main research explores laser-based 2D and 3D direct-write techniques for biomaterials micro-structuring and the use of these structures as tissue engineering constructs in regenerative medicine. Specifically, micro-stereolithography and two-photon polymerisation are used as manufacturing techniques. These 3D structuring techniques are used to produce tissue engineering scaffolds for nerve guides, corneal implants and bone tissue engineering scaffolds. Additionally, FC is investigating the inclusion of vasculature within scaffolds materials using these 3D direct-write techniques. An important component of this work is to combine these techniques with other manufacturing techniques, e.g. electrospinning to produce bespoke materials for tissue engineering.
